Their study involved 444 patients who entered the Christchurch or Dunedin intensive care units. Patients’ blood was tested on admission to the units and then for following seven days. The blood was screened for presence of cystatin C.

Analysis showed screening with the new cystatin C test, patients’ potentially life-threatening kidney injuries were detected earlier than by the current screening tool, creatinine, in 66 per cent of the cases.

Professor Endre says the rate of death from AKI has not really improved over the past 50 years so this study provides a real advantage to clinicians.

“The cystatin C test is inexpensive and, after more tests to prove its effectiveness, will no doubt become regularly used in hospitals,” he said.

It's scientific name is Enhydrina schistosa. It is an extremely dangerous snake and can swallow prey twice the size of its neck. It grows up to 1.2 meters in length. It eats eels, catfish, fish eggs and fish. It is responsible for over half of all the sea snake bites. It has specialized flattened tails for swimming.

Saw Scaled Viper:
It's scientific name is Echis carinatus. Its color is light buff. It belongs to the viper family with shades of gray, brown or dull red. It is a small but very dangerous viper. It is an ill-tempered snake. When provoked it rubs special scales together to make a loud rasping sound.

Coral Snake:
It's scientific name is Micrurus fulvius. It is found in Central America, North America and South America. It spends much of its life underground in cracks and crevices. Its maximum length is not more than three feet. It feeds on other snakes, lizards, reptiles and amphibians. It has more than fifty different species. It has big red bands and small yellow and black bands.

Boomslang:
It's scientific name is Dispholidus typus. It is found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a large tree dwelling and very poisonous snake. It feeds on frogs, lizards, small mammals, eggs and birds. It grows up to 5.5 meters in length.

Death Adder:
It's scientific name is Acanthopis antarcticus. It is found everywhere in Australia except for Tasmania and Victoria. It can have up to 20 live offspring. It is a wide, narrow-tailed, brown and reddish-orange snake. It grows up to 1.5 meters in length. Its venom attacks the nerves leading to paralysis.

At least 89 villagers died when a cyclone Knocked down 10 of 1000's of mud huts in north east India, officials reported today.

The cyclone struck overnight in the states of West Bengal and Bihar, with winds of more than 100mph uprooting trees and snapping telephone and electricity lines.

Devesh Chandra Thakur, Bihar's minister for disaster management, said there had been no weather department warning of a cyclone, so residents had been unprepared.

Television footage showed uprooted trees lying across shanties and sheets of corrugated metal ripped from roofs. Children sat outside damaged huts as parents tried to salvage their belongings from inside.

One West Bengal resident, 51-year-old Namita Biswas, said she and her husband had been sleeping in their hut when it was crushed by a tree broken by the cyclone. Her husband was killed.

The cyclone demolished nearly 50,000 mud huts in West Bengal and thousands more in Bihar, officials said. The worst-hit villages in West Bengal were Hematabad, Raiganj and Kiran Dighi, where police and rescue teams recovered 39 bodies, said Ramanuj Chakraborty, a senior official.

Another 50 people were killed in the north-eastern Bihar districts of Araria, Kishanganj and Purnea, according to government officials.

The authorities were starting today to send medical teams and food supplies to the cyclone-hit area, said Ramanuj Chakraborty, a West Bengal official. Temporary shelters were being set up for those who had lost their homes.

A prison wall collapsed in Bihar's Araria district, forcing authorities to shift more than 600 inmates to another prison.

After 200 years of silence, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland began erupting last month. The ash plume, which reached seven miles into the atmosphere, has blanketed Europe for the past five days and all but collapsed air travel.

A cloud of volcanic matter has risen over much of Europe from the erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland. A major eruption occured on April 14, 2010, resulting in a plume of volcanic ash being thrown into the atmosphere. Air traffic has been subject to cancellation or delays as airspace across parts of Northern Europe has been closed.

Europeans invented the horseless carriages, but Americans embraced it. As early as 1896, J. Frank and Charles Duryea established the Duryea Motor Company in Peoria, Illinois, and sold the first dozen American-made cars. By 1900 American carmakers had sold about 8,000 vehicles, and by 1910, registrations had soared nearly to half million and were rising rapidly. Leading the adoption of automobiles were doctors and other professionals, but others quickly followed, putting cars into service for the purpose of business, politics, commuting, and recreation. By 1910 automobiles were already becoming necessities.

Not everyone embraced the new machines, however, and enthusiasts had to argue the automobile's superiority over the old "haymotors." Advocates claimed the cars were faster than horses, didn't tire, consumed less fuel, never ran away and were also cleaner. Some even reasoned that cars would eliminate traffic congestion, because an automobile only took up half the space of a horse and buggy!

This exhibition presents lovingly preserved vehicles from the 1900-1910 period, along with related material that illuminates how people experienced that complex, finicky, but most versatile machine, the horseless carriage. The cars themselves displayed great variety in cost, technical innovation, and performance capability. They ranged from a motorized buggy like the Columbus to the powerful, heavy (and costly) Packard.

La Jolla Shores (8200 Camino del Oro) is a sandy beach approximately one mile long, adjacent to a residential area. In summer, waves at this beach are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches, although rip currents may still be strong at times. For this reason, many novice scuba classes are held at La Jolla Shores. Kellogg Park, a grassy area, is located behind the main lifeguard station and is ideal for picnicking. A wide cement boardwalk parallels a portion of the beach between the park and the sand.

La Jolla Shores lies adjacent to the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Ecological Reserve. Fishing and removal of objects from this area is prohibited. At the north end of this beach lies the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Scripps Pier. The pier is not open to the public, but the Steven Birch Aquarium is within 1/2 mile of La Jolla Shores and is open daily.

La Jolla Shores has the only beachfront boat launch within City limits. Small vessels can be launched directly into the surf at the foot of Avenida de la Playa, approximately 300 yards south of the lifeguard station. This is an unimproved boat launch and vehicles are allowed to drive on the sand in a very limited area at five miles per hour or less. Four wheel drive is highly recommended.

The ephemerals exploit these conditions—they flower, fruit, and their above-ground parts decay before summer gets into full swing. The peak of spring wildflower blooming usually occurs in mid- to late-April at lower elevations in the park, and a few weeks later on the highest peaks.

Spring ephemerals include flowers such as trillium (the park has 10 different species), lady slipper orchids, showy orchis, crested dwarf iris, fire pink, columbine, bleeding heart, phacelia, jack-in-the-pulpit, little brown jugs, and violets, to name just a few. Suggested wildflower walks.

Each spring, the park hosts the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, a week-long festival of programs and guided walks and hikes that explore the wondrous diversity of life in the park.
